Peace to you, dear brothers and sisters — Happy Easter! The Lord Jesus is risen! Hallelujah!
Today we reflect on Luke chapter 24 — the Easter story, specifically the moving encounter of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. This is one of the first moments Jesus appeared to His disciples after the resurrection. And what makes it so special is that it didn’t happen in a crowded temple or at a large gathering. It happened on a quiet, downcast road — a path of disappointment — where the risen Lord came personally to seek out, walk alongside, and restore two disheartened disciples.
One key word comes to mind from this story: Restoration.
The resurrection of Jesus is not only an awe-inspiring miracle or a hope for eternal life — it is also a personal power that restores the hearts of those who believe in Him.
Let’s begin by looking at the state of these two disciples. They were described as “downcast,” “eyes kept from recognizing,” and “hearts full of sorrow.”They were walking with heavy hearts, because the one they believed would redeem Israel had been crucified, died, and buried. They said, “We had hoped…” — those words expose a heart that has given up hope.
But we also witness how their hearts were restored:
1. Their Faith was Restored through God’s Word
Jesus began to explain the Scriptures to them — from Moses to the Prophets — everything that pointed to Himself.
Many people today still treat the Old Testament as if it's outdated or irrelevant — especially new believers. But look at what Jesus says:
“How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(Luke 24:25–27)
Later, He says to the rest of the disciples:
“This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.(Luke 24:44–45)
Can you see? The Gospel is not just in the New Testament — it begins in the Old.And unlike those first disciples, we have the Holy Spirit, helping us understand the Word and shining light into our hearts.
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is a single, unified message — the grand story of God’s redemptive plan.So just as Jesus reignited the hearts of those two disciples, He does the same for us today. When we open the Bible with a desire to hear from Him, He speaks, and our hearts, like theirs, burn within us.
“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
2. Their Sight was Restored by the Word of God
After listening to Jesus’ teaching, their eyes were opened — and they recognized Him. Then He disappeared.
That moment of recognition wasn’t about physical eyesight. It was about clarity — the veil was lifted.Maybe it was grief, disappointment, or confusion that clouded their vision. But Jesus had been with them the whole time — they just didn’t recognize Him.
There’s a beautiful Cantonese worship song called “Footprints.”One line goes like this:
“In the moments of despair and trial, I only saw one set of footprints. Why did You leave me to walk alone? But then, You gently whispered:‘Those footprints were Mine — I was carrying you.’”
Even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death — He is with us.He never leaves us. And one day, just like those disciples, we’ll realize:He’s been with us the whole time.
3. Their Mission was Restored through God’s Word
When these disciples walked away from Jerusalem, they were walking away from their calling. They no longer saw themselves as disciples. Why would they? Jesus was dead. Their hopes were gone. They were probably thinking:“We may as well go home and get a job.”
But after Jesus broke bread with them — after they heard the Word and recognized Him —everything changed.
Their hearts burned. Their eyes were opened. And they ran back to Jerusalem — ten kilometers in the dark — just to tell the others,“The Lord is risen!”
They couldn’t stay silent. They had to share. That’s the power of a restored mission.True evangelism doesn’t come from pressure or guilt. It comes from encountering the risen Lord and being ignited by His Word.
This story isn’t just history. It’s not just an annual Easter sermon. It’s a personal invitation — a new beginning.
Just like the two on the road to Emmaus, may our hearts burn again, may our eyes be opened, may our mission be restored.
Jesus didn’t give them a new method or ministry strategy. He gave them the Word of God.He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
Today, He offers the same to us — His Spirit and His Word. And when our faith is rooted in Scripture, when we walk in prayer and obedience, our faith is no longer just theory. It becomes a living walk with a living Savior.
He is risen. He is with us.Let this Easter be our spiritual reset.
Let us say:“Lord, from this day on, I will not walk this faith journey alone — I will follow Your Word.”
Let your heart be reignited, your eyes opened, and your mission restored.
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Amen.
