Brothers and sisters, peace be with you,
Today, we are going to read the story of Jesus walking on water, which is recorded in the last section of Mark chapter 6, from verse 45 to 54. Let's take a look at the exciting events in this story.
We have just seen Jesus completing the miraculous feeding of the five thousand with five loaves and two fish, satisfying the hunger of the multitude. As soon as this event concluded, Jesus instructed his disciples to immediately get into the boat and cross over to the other side of the sea, while he himself went up the mountain to pray. If we refer to John 6:14, we understand that at this time, the crowd wanted to make Jesus their king. Jesus understood that these people wanted to start a revolution, to rebel against Roman rule. They did not truly understand Jesus' identity and the mission he was about to undertake. Therefore, he quickly distanced himself from them and dispersed the disciples, so as not to be forced by a blind multitude to deviate from his mission. A truly wise leader understands what needs to be done and what doesn't, and won't be troubled or coerced by the wishes of the people.
He prayed on the mountain until early morning, during the fourth watch, which is from three to six in the morning, the darkest hour before dawn. At this time, he saw the disciples struggling to row forward on the lake because the wind was against them, making them row against the wind. They were putting in a lot of effort, but it was not easy. Jesus understood this, so he immediately went to help them. As there was no boat with him, Jesus directly used his own power to walk on the surface of the lake. As he walked, the storm ceased, and the waves calmed down. Once again, Jesus calmed the wind and waves, and let the disciples see who he was. However, even at this moment, the disciples still did not recognize him. Despite seeing him calm the storm on the lake and witnessing the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, the disciples still did not truly recognize him.
Let us truly get to know Jesus. We may be going through storms and difficulties in life, but when we know that Jesus has the power to calm the storm, he will surely walk with us. When we walk with Jesus, he will surely lead us safely through. If you are currently in a storm, please remember that Jesus is with you, have faith in him, and he will surely calm the storm.
Next, when Jesus arrived on the other side, a large crowd immediately surrounded him. Many people from the rural towns brought sick people, hoping that Jesus could heal them. However, when we see so many people, at the moment when Jesus was on the cross, we see that all the people disappeared. So many people just wanted to use Jesus, just wanted to see his healing power, treating him as a means to an end. Once they got what they wanted, they left.
Is human nature also like this? When someone has a need, they want to become your best friend, spend time with you every day, talk to you every day because you have what they need. However, once you fulfill their needs, complete their requests, this person disappears, leaves, and becomes irrelevant to you.
Do we also have this tendency? In times of difficulty and challenge, we draw near to God, diligently reading scriptures, pondering God's words. However, once our lives are smooth, once our situation improves, we start to neglect God, no longer caring about Him. In fact, what Jesus shows us here is that most people who come to him are seeking benefits rather than giving.
Are we treating God like a servant? Calling him only when we need him, putting him aside when there's nothing going on? Is this our attitude towards God? Is this the attitude of our church? Is this how we treat our friends? If we can reflect on this, we'll realize that to some extent, we've all made this mistake. However, once we notice this, we can change our mindset, and with love, become servants of others, servants of the church, servants of God. Not just praying to God, but truly loving him and being grateful.
This way, we can establish a relationship of mutual love with God, and have a healthy relationship walking with God. We no longer see Him as our servant, but become His servants, respecting and loving Him because He loves us, loves us enough to sacrifice His own life.
Thank you all for listening. Tomorrow, we will continue reading the story of Mark chapter 7, exploring the general principles of cleanliness and uncleanness.
